"Steps to Success" Mentoring Program and Parent Volunteer Program
We are currently collaborating with
Mass Gear Up, Pueblo School District 60 and 70, Pueblo Community
College, and CSU-Pueblo to provide mentoring services to our
community's youth. We have always provided a mentoring basis
through our program but strongly feel the need to have a sound
and structured program in this area. Along with this service,
we feel the need to provide our schools and our program with
an effective Parent Volunteer Program. An essential part of
this growth is attracting and retaining parent volunteers,
an area needing considerable time and concentrated effort.
Currently Concerned Parents of Pueblo has 14 parent
volunteers in six local middle schools and five local high
schools. Our goal is to have 2 to 4 parent volunteers accessible
to the students in each of our middle and high schools from
both school districts. |

Senior
Support Program This program
includes Concerned Parent's collaboration with our local SRDA's Annual Rake -Up
Pueblo Event. On November 9, 2002, Concerned Parents and SRDA engaged over 605
volunteers to rake 300 senior's yards in one day. Since the inception of Rake
Up Pueblo in 1998, over 1305 senior yards have been raked, utilizing over 3,215
volunteers. Approximately 9,900 cubic yards of leaves have been recycled at
Pueblo's Greenway and Nature Center. |

designed to address issues that youth and families are faced with today. Some
topics include: drugs, binge drinking, violence, gangs, credit management,
living and learning, and goal setting. Concerned Parents has organized over 75
workshops since the inception of the organization. |

Incentive to Stay in School Youth participant members are allowed to earn incentive
points during regular school periods for being a teacher's aid, weekly perfect
attendance, and can receive points for Grade Point Average. Concerned Parents
has awarded an average of 5,000 points a year to youth participants. In the
last three years Concerned Parents has seen an increase in student GPA's and
attendance. |
 |
Community Volunteer Service Program participants earn incentive points by
volunteering at over 50 nonprofit sites. Volunteer hours by youth participants
have averaged over 20,000 hours per year. |

Community Pride Clean Ups The clean ups are being performed to help promote
community pride by bringing together resources to help the residents clean up
properties and spruce up their neighborhood. In doing so, this enables the
residents to get rid of debris, tree trimmings, old appliances, tires,
mattresses, etc. In the last 12 months 60 miles of Pueblo's highways has been
cleaned. The River Trail clean up is a new project of cleaning up trash and
graffiti for 22 miles following the Arkansas River. For the last seven years,
Concerned Parents has participated in an average of 10 major clean ups per
year. |
 |
Youth United Committee A group of youth participants have come together to
support a cause of importance to each member. Each member makes recommendations
that support Concerned Parent's programs or projects. The desired outcome of
the committee is the creation of youth empowerment and the development of
leadership skills. |
