| Concerned Parents of Pueblo, (CPP) began its life in 1992
because parents of Pueblo, Colorado, became fed up with increasing youth
violence in the schools and community. Their anger arose in large part because
they perceived a failure of the schools, local government and other community
institutions to respond effectively and compassionately to the needs of youth
and parents. The founders of Concerned Parents of Pueblo, Mr. Fred Tripp
and Mr. Ben Ramos, started this grassroots organization based on the philosophy
that parents and youth need to have significant and meaningful opportunities
for bettering community life through volunteerism. |

| The co
founders identified key issues that need to be addressed in the Pueblo
community. These issues are: (a) high rates of teen pregnancy, (b) high
incidences of youth on youth violence, (c) high drop out rates for low income
and minority high school students, (d) low college attendance rates, (e) drug
and alcohol abuse problems, (f) the need for practical job readiness training
for Pueblo area youth, (g) lack of youth civic involvement and (h) few outlets
for meaningful youth volunteerism. |
